2017 ESHRE in Geneva !!!

(I tried the yogurt in coffee taste, and I am sure that it was not my type.)
We had four days in ESHRE, including one day of pre-congress course. I took the part of genetics in reproduction, focusing on the talks related with DNAs, gene expression, PGS, and mitochondria ... etc. My own oral and poster topics were in PGS: one was the correlationship between the mosaicism and individual chromosome lengths; and another one was the effect of male factors in embryo ploidies. We took a photo in front of our e-poster, and I really appreciate our design group, since the poster looked very nice!
The oral presentation made me anxious for couple of weeks. I definitely got teary when I received the acceptance, though I felt both headache and stomachache before my session. I decided not to think about the people sat under the stage, and looked one of my colleague stood beside the entrance. It was good that I have finished everything now!
(We just pretended that we were the college students. Maybe ph.D student? :D)

We did not cook for the last night, and decided to eat the "real" Siwss food. We choose the restaurant named "Les Armures," and ordered the pink wine for celebration! The location was close to the University of Geneva.

During May 1st to 3rd in 2017, Taiwan Chamber of Commerce in Canada (TCCCA) hold "2017 Taiwan Medical Services Orientation" in couple of places in Canada, introducing more facets of Taiwan medical techniques to the local expatriates whose original language are Chinese. The Taiwanese representatives were from aesthetic or cosmetic medical center, dental department, health evaluation center, ophthalmology department, and fertility center. Stork Fertility Center was the only delegate of infertility, showing the patient-friendly program design, advanced assisted reproductive techniques and competitive prices to the people in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver.

International medical service provides more convenience to the patients

To have better medical service than home country, medical tourism has become a more popular word. For example, Asian patients with cancer or cardiovascular diseases would go to Japan or other developed countries for the advanced treatments. In the realm of reproductive medicine, the condition for patients who need donated oocytes is different. Since the law restricted the oocyte donation in Japan, patients must find a solution overseas.
The assisted reproductive technologyhas been developed around one decade in Taiwan. In 2007, the oocyte donation was allowed in Taiwan by the authority decree, and the oocyte cryopreservation for social reason as well. For patients with authorized marriage certificate, they can take the oocyte-donation program if the wife's ovarian reserve displayed significant diminished, because taking more IVF cycles seems inefficient.
Not many countries in Asia allow oocyte donation, such as Japan, China (including Hong Kong and Macau), Singapore, and Philippines. Thus more and more overseas patients came to Taiwan for the oocyte donation program. To provide more information to the patients who needs donated oocytes, the Stork Fertility Center held an orientation in Fukuota, Japan, on 6th, November, 2016.
Until 2016, Seventy-five fertility centers in Taiwan provides the oocyte donation program. Among them, the Stork Fertility Center had our own oocyte bank, which can be immediately used after appropriate matching process. The majority of oocyte recipients were from mainland China, including Hong Kong and Macau, and the second was from Japan.
The first orientation was held in the Grand Hyatt Hotel of Fukuota, since most Japanese patients were from there. In the future, the orientation would be held in Tokyo (April, 2017) and Osaka (August, 2017). By the interactions with the audience, we can understand the patients' real needs and expectations.
The past records of Stork Fertility Center showed that half of patients can achieve successful pregnancy after the first cryotransfer, and around 90% of patients can achieve successful pregnancy after the second cryotransfer. The oldest case was a 62-year old woman.
After the orientation, the team also had a birthday party for the patients' IVF babies. The superintendent of Stork Fertility Center, Dr.Lai, said that," our goal is to help the couples who need baby to start a family, no matter how difficult it is."

Women play a big part inTaiwan 's workforce, trailing only New Zealand and Australia for female employment among 14 countries in Asia , a recent report by MasterCard showed.
A slowdown in the economy has made job security an even more pressing priority. That has been a factor in pushing the East Asian island's average marriage age to 30 these days, from24 in the 1980s, and in driving the interest in egg freezing.
"I was not sure when my ovaries would start degenerating but I was sure that I would probably marry late and I was sure that I wanted to become a mother," said Linn Kuo, 34, who chose to freeze her eggs three years ago.
Kuo, a manager at Cisco System Taiwan Ltd, has a well-paid job that allows her to work from home. While her career has had a smooth trajectory, Kuo said she has not been as lucky in her love live.
After her mother died, she realised the importance of having the support of children in later life.
"I already had my conclusion," she said. "So I did some research and decided to freeze my eggs."
Lai Hsing-hua, the clinic director at e-Stork Reproduction Center in the city ofHsinchu , said he realised the need for egg-freezing services when many patients asked for egg donors after a late marriage.
"We thought if they had frozen their eggs earlier, maybe they wouldn't need to use donated eggs," he said. "That's why we combined in-vitro fertilisation with the idea of prevention - prevent them from using others' eggs after their fertility has deteriorated."
The clinic now gets more than 100 phone calls a month asking about egg freezing.
Five years ago, it did just 20 of the procedures. It handled more than 70 cases in 2011, more than 50 last year and already more than40 in the first six months of this year.
The technology has matured and the embryo now has a high survival rate with egg freezing, Lai said. The service costs around 80,000Taiwan dollars and the whole process of retrieving the egg takes about 20 minutes.
Chen Fen-ling, a professor of social work at National Taipei University, said societal pressures were causing women to delay marrying and starting a family.
"Married women are like candles burning at both ends," she said. "We say that women work two jobs. They make money with a daytime job but, when they go back home, they take care of their children and parents-in-law. This pressure often makes women hesitate when making the decision about marriage."
Those realities about career, marriage and motherhood are reflected in a woefully low birthrate.Taiwan is tied with Hong Kong in third-last place globally in terms of the average number of children born per woman, just above Macau and Singapore , the CIA World Factbook says. e-Stork helps hemophilia carrier have healthy child

Taipei, April 29 (CNA) A biotechnology company in Taiwan said Thursday that it has helped a local woman who carries the hemophilia gene to conceive a baby who will not suffer from hemophilia -- a genetic disease that makes bleeding uncontrollable -- and hailed it as the first case in Asia.
The woman, whose name was not revealed, had lost four sons over the past 10 years, one of whom died during surgery, possibly because of hemophilia, when he was 7 months old, while the other were aborted after being diagnosed with hemophilia.
"She did not give up despite a series of failed attempts. Now, she is having a healthy child due in August after using an advanced biotechnology technique called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)," said her doctor, Stork Lai, Dean of e-Stork Reproductive Center in Hsin Chu City, Taiwan.
"The biotechnology helps find out if an embryo is free of the hemophilia gene before the embryo is implanted in the womb, " he told reporters.
At the press briefing, Lai donated NT$1 million (about US$32,000) he received from the woman's husband as a gift to benefit more of those in Taiwan who fear having a hemophiliac baby.
The donation will go to Genesis Genetics Asia (GGA), a subsidiary of Bionet that offers the biotechnology. The donation is expected to benefit 15 people, each of whom will receive a subsidy of NT$75,000 that will pay for the biotechnology to screen out the hemophilia gene.
"The biotechnology is expensive and we hope the government can also provide funds to better cover the expenses, " said Jacky Liao, head of Hemophiliacs' Rights Taiwan, a body dedicated to the welfare of hemophiliacs.
There are more than 900 hemophiliacs in Taiwan, many of whom want to have children, he added.
Hemophiliacs are the top receivers of government subsidies for their disease expenses under Taiwan's national health program, according to government figures released in March.
The PGD technology, which was invented by U.S. doctor Mark Hughes in 1990, has helped some 5,000 cases in the United States and Europe, covering hemophilia and nearly 200 other hereditary diseases, according to GGA.
Bionet sought to obtain the biotechnology eight years ago, but did not get authorization for the Asian region until 2008 after beating competitors from Malaysia, Japan and China, said Chris Tsai, the company's chairman.
Bionet established GGA in late 2008 as a joint venture with Hughes' Genesis Genetics Institute.
